Institute of geotechnical mechanics name of N.S. Polyakov the National academy of sciences of Ukraine

History. Institute of Geotechnical Mechanics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU IGTM) was established in 1962 to address the fundamental problems of mining at great depths. In 2002 the Institute was named N.S. Polyakov. A characteristic feature of this time is for the permanent presence of the creative and business contacts with mining companies, project, academic and industrial research institutes and higher educational institutions in Ukraine and abroad. When the work is organically combined theoretical and experimental research that allows us to solve at a high scientific level of the fundamental problems of mining and to bring research results to practical use. The main areas of research: the properties of rocks and arrays, their destruction and control of the stress-deformed state, the physical foundations of mining process equipment and technology of mining and minerals processing, the processes and technologies energy conversion coal and coal mine methane, operating parameters and structure of energy systems, energy efficient and reliability of the mining industry.

Structure of the Institute consists of 19 academic departments, research and experimental department and a special design bureau. The main areas of research: the properties of rocks and arrays, their destruction and control of the stress-deformed state, the physical foundations of mining process equipment and technology of mining and minerals processing, the processes and technologies energy conversion coal and coal mine methane, operating parameters and structure of energy systems, conservation of energy and reliability of the mining industry. On the basis of scientific discoveries, researchers of the Institute formed a fundamentally new conceptual approach to solving technical problems coal mining at great depths. Established in accordance with this approach, technology and technical methods have stood the test practice in complex geological conditions.

Human resources. The high level of fundamental research carried out mainly achieved thanks to the fruitful work formed the institute of scientific school of academician of NAS of Ukraine, N.S. Polyakov, V.N. Poturaev, A.F. Bulat, V.E. Zabigaylo, V.F. Prisnyakov and corresponding members of NAS, F.A. Abramov E.I. Ephraim, who earned international recognition. On the basis of leading scientific schools during the life of the institute as a scientific institution, NAS has been prepared 76 doctors and 435 candidates of science who are now working at the Institute as well as in different cities of Ukraine, Commonwealth of Independent States and far abroad. Director of the Institute – Honored Scientist of Ukraine, laureate of State Prize of Ukraine, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Anatoly Bulat.

Scientific achievements. Today IGTM NAS is the only academic institution in the Ukraine mining profile, the main activity of which is to geomechanics and geotechnical exploration and conservation of mineral resources. At the institute has a № of important achievements, including 11 scientific discoveries that will define the new directions of development of mining science and practice. On this basis, developed a fundamentally new conceptual approach to solving technical problems coal mining at great depths, according to which the negative and harmful factors such as pressure, Outburst, gas, etc. not oppose the proposed technology, and are involved in useful work. This approach stood the practical test in the most complicated geological conditions of mining of various minerals. Basic research institute found the display in such competitive developments, as search technology, production and utilization of methane, its natural and anthropogenic accumulations on Coal and Gas fields, non-traditional technology of coal mining at greater depths with the energy of rock pressure, how to prevent sudden outbursts of coal and rock gas, new construction fasteners, tools and techniques of vibrato-acoustic and ultrasonic diagnostic status and properties of rocks and the array.

The most important development. Created Institute for cyclic-threading technology and product development destroyed by explosion rocks of the complex machinery of cyclic and continuous operation are used in almost all open-cast mining of mineral resources in Ukraine and abroad. Parametric dynamic range of active rubber band-resonating strings sit for the classification of minerals allows a 50–80 fold increase in the life of screening and successfully working in the enterprises corporation «Yakut diamond» gold mines association «North-East Gold» many iron ore, aggregates, metallurgical and coal preparation enterprises. Developed at the Institute of conceptual approach to the problem of restructuring the coal industry, based on the diversification of coal mines in the direction of deep processing of coal into electricity and heat by a heat and power systems, is part of the development strategy of fuel and energy complex of Ukraine.

Awards. Development of the Institute of Sciences of Ukraine was represented at trade fairs in Spain, India, Mongolia, Bulgaria, Germany, where they were awarded medals and diplomas. The most urgent work awarded nine Ukrainian State Prize in Science and Technology (1972, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1988, 1991, 1996, 1998, 2003), 5 prizes of NASU. A.I. Dinnik (1982, 1989, 1992, 1995, 1999), NASU Prize. V.P. Vernadsky (1986), Prize of the Russian Federation to them. A.A. Skochinskiy (1997), the international award «Torch of Birmingham» (1996), Diploma of the International Academy of Business Leaders and Administration (1996). Organizing Committee of the project «EC-XXI Century» Institute awarded medals and diplomas in the nomination «Leader of the XXI Century» and «Company of XXI Century» (2001). Institute – a permanent participant in international symposia, congresses, congresses, conferences and seminars. The Institute is Interdepartmental Scientific Council «Scientific basis for the development of coal deposits» at the Presidium of NAS of Ukraine, Ministry of Fuel and Energy of Ukraine and State Committee for Geology of Ukraine and the Scientific Council of NASU «Mechanics and technology explosion and its use in the national economy». Institute founder of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine «Association of Authors of Scientific Discoveries of Ukraine», which acts on its base since 1995.
